Get around easily and safely: maps and guides
London may seem vast and buzzing with energy, but getting around is a breeze thanks to its well-connected Tube system. With 11 Underground lines, it’s quick and easy to travel from one side of the city to the other. Many first-time visitors prefer exploring central London on foot, taking in top spots such as Covent Garden, Westminster and Soho. For hassle-free travel, get an Oyster card to access the Tube, buses and trains. While London is generally a safe city, as with any big city, pay attention to your surroundings, plan your route in advance and don’t leave bags unattended.
Traditional London experiences for first-time visitors
Must-do experiences in London for the first time include visiting Buckingham Palace and the Tower of London, London Eye and Tower Bridge, take in the views from a river cruise and seeing a show in London’s West End such as The Lion King and The Phantom of the Opera. We would also recommend boarding a hop-on hop-off bus, which stops near many of London’s top attractions – just hop off at each stop to explore at your own pace. Or see more and save by picking up The London Pass sightseeing pass, which gives access to many of the city’s best attractions and experiences.
Treat your taste buds to some traditional food and drink - dainty sandwiches, warm scones fresh from the oven and pretty cakes, all washed down with a cup of tea. Or experience British food staples such as fish and chips, Sunday roasts, or a pint of beer in a cosy local pub.
