ESGO 2026: A Sustainable Congress

Along with the excitement to re-connect face to face in Copenhagen, we are aware of the environmental, economic and social impact of the congress, and aim to make it as sustainable and eco-friendly as possible, with a goal of lower waste and carbon emissions.

Paperless congress programme
- ESGO 2026 will be a paperless congress, with no printed materials, such as the final or pocket programme.
- The information at the venue will be available mainly in a digital format.
- All congress materials will be available on the mobile app.
- Maximise your experience and get the ESGO 2026 app, available for Android and iPhone devices!
- You will be able to explore the Final programme, all speakers, browse ePosters, and add your favourite sessions to your personal calendar!
ESGO supports carbon offset projects
- Carbon offset projects reduce CO₂ emissions and support sustainable development by transferring technology and combating poverty.
- ESGO is collecting a carbon offset fee in the value of 10 € from each congress participant.
- ESGO will be encouraging emission and pollution elimination through a donation via atmosfair.de.
- ESGO Council members have voted on projects where the income from the carbon offset was donated. Please see all details below in the "Carbon Offset" section.
ESGO supports less plastic waste
- All delegates will receive a reusable water bottle made of sugar cane, supplied by Join the Pipe.
- Join the Pipe is committed to a world with less plastic waste, and in which everyone, everywhere in the world, has access to safe drinking water. By promoting drinking tap water from reusable bottles and refill stations we want to reduce the use of plastic. For clean drinking water, healthy living conditions and to tackle plastic pollution at its source.
- Feel free to bring your own coffee mug to elimate the use of paper cups.
Venue location
Easily accessible
- Copenhagen is well connected with cities around the globe.
- Once there, efficient public transportation and pedestrian and bike friendly infrastructure make it easy and fast to get around.
- The congress venue is easily accessible by public transportation, both from the airport and the city centre - by metro, trains or buses.
- Congress participants can benefit from a reduced public transportation ticket.
- This reduces the need for individual taxis or shuttle, which could help reduce CO2 emissions.
Bella Center venue
Sustainable and eco friendly
- Bella Center applies a Responsible Hospitality strategy.
- Since 2016, their carbon footprint was reduced, and energy cut by with over 40% - primarily by focusing on energy efficiency and renewable energy.
- Approx. 30% of energy is generated through a roof-integrated solar panel park.
- After the event, Bella Center will provide an Event Climate Report which conducts an analysis of emissions associated with the congress. Calculation includes energy and water consumption, waste, purchased goods, and food and beverage consumption.
Catering, waste elimination & recycling
- Local and seasonal ingredients are preferred, ensuring fresh, healthy, and varied products.
- Ethically sourced products, purchased with care for the environment and animal welfare, preferably with certifications such as organic, MSC and Fairtrade.
- Vegetarian food is served for ESGO congress participants on all occasions.
- Food leftovers are either donated to charity, composted on-site, or converted into biogas after being weighed and registered.
- A Zero-waste commitment is embraced, with the aim to minimise landfill disposal by reducing, reusing, recycling, or repurposing materials.
- Water stations offer some of the world's purest tap water.
Carbon Offset Projects supported by ESGO
Beginning in 2022, ESGO introduced a €10 carbon offset fee for all Congress delegates. The funds raised from this initiative have been used to support the following projects:

Agriculture Systems Adaptation Program in Ethiopia

Contribution will be used to purchase farm tools and forest seeds to support climate vulnerable farmers to cope with the climate change effects in Ethiopia.

Fuel-efficient Save80 stove sets in Rwanda

Families need up to 80 % less firewood when using the fuel-efficient Save80 stove. Through the innovative design, it also reaches higher temperatures than the often used three stone fireplaces, therefore emitting less smoke and contributing to better indoor air. With the stove the users receive three fitting pots and the Wonderbox.

Small scale biogas plants in Nepal

In rural Nepal, wood is the most important energy source. But the population grows quickly and wood is becoming less and less. What’s the solution? The waste of Nepal’s most important commercial sector: farming. Your donation supports building new biogas plants, which turn dung into gas. This is used to cook on gas cookers.
