ESGO Helga Salvesen Translational and Clinical Research Award

In commemoration of Prof. Helga Salvesen, ESGO Council member, member of ENTRIGO and founder of ENITEC,  the ESGO Council decided to initiate the biannual ESGO Helga Salvesen Award for a major contribution in translational research in 2017, prior to the ESGO Congress.

 

This award is meant for a clinician or translational researcher who made a significant contribution to translational research in gynaecological oncology in the past few years.

It is our great pleasure to announce that this year the award will be given to Prof. Xavier Matias-Guiu Guia from the Hospital U de Bellvitge and Hospital U Arnau de Vilanova, Barcelona, Spain, at the Presidential and Awards session of the ESGO 2024 Congress in Barcelona.

In his Helga Salvesen Award presentation, Prof. Xavier Matias-Guiu Guia will present his recent research in oncological pathology.

About Prof. Matias-Guiu Guia


Xavier Matias-Guiu, is a Professor of Pathology at the University of Barcelona, since 2019, and Lleida since 2002.

He is also chairman of Pathology Hospital Universitari Arnau de Vilanova de Lleida, since 2002 and Hospital Universitari de Bellvitge, Barcelona Spain, since 2015.

Training in Pathology in Hospital de Sant Pau, Barcelona, Spain, (1983-86). Postdoctoral fellowship in Research Pathology at New England Medical Center-Tufts University, Boston, USA (1991-92), with a part-time activity at Massachusetts General Hospital, Harvard University, with Dr. Scully.

A faculty member of the Pathology Department Hospital de Sant Pau, Barcelona (1988-2002) with Dr. Jaime Prat.

Author of over 400 publications and member of several editorial boards (Virchow Archiv, Int J Gynecol Pathol, Sem Diagn Pathol, Endocrine Pathol).

President, Sociedad Española de Anatomía Patológica (2019-21); Member of the Council of European Society of Pathology (2015-19).

Member of the Executive committee (2009-2013), President-Elect (2019-21), and President (2021-23) of the International Society of Gynecologic Pathologists; Member, of the World Health Organization (WHO) panel for Classification of Tumours of the Female Genital Tract, (IARC, Lyon France; 2014 and 2020). ESGO guidelines for endometrial cancer (2014, 2020), ICCR Endometrial Cancer Histopathology Reporting Guide (2021), and ESMO guidelines for homologous recombination deficiency in ovarian cancer (2020).
